Wayne Jerald Cunningham, age 93, died January 14, 2015, at Gordon Memorial Hospital. Wayne was born September 8, 1921, to Clida J. and Florence A. (Glover) Cunningham at Gordon, Nebraska. He grew up on the family homestead 5 miles west of Gordon. He attended grade school at District 80, a short distance from his home and graduated high school at Clinton, NE, in 1939. Wayne enlisted in the US Army on October 2, 1942 and served in the 360 Medical Unit in the South Pacific, including New Guinea, Philippines, Luzon and Australia. Upon his honorable discharge on February 28, 1946, he returned to the family farm where he lived and worked until an accident in October of 2013 forced him to retire from his career of farming and ranching. One of the highlights of his life was when Wayne went on the Honor Flight to Washington DC to see the WWII Veterans Memorial. Wayne was a member of the DAV and served as Commander for many years, he was also a member of the Gordon American Legion Post #34, Odd Fellows and the Tri-State Cowboy Association. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters; Hope Saxton, Doris Bayliss Carpenter and Bonnie Stephens. He is survived by 2 sisters, Delores (Bill) Nydahl of Lincoln, NE, and Marva Holst of Gillette, WY, numerous nephews and nieces and their extended families. Funeral services were held Saturday January 17, 2015, 10:00 AM at the Gordon American Legion. Burial with Military Honors was held in Fairview Cemetery, Rushville, NE. The family suggests memorial donations to the DAV, the Gordon American Legion or the Tri-State Cowboys Museum and donations may be sent in care of Chamberlain-Pier Funeral Home, PO Box 366 Gordon, NE 69343.
