Vincent Quigg

Vincent Quigg Vincent Quigg was one of 6 children born to Mabel (Cushing) and Frank Quigg, July 24, 1917. He passed away August 1, 2015, at Gordon Countryside Care. Like many children born in the early 1900's he was born at home. His life started on a ranch 8 miles northwest of Gordon and he attended the one room Lone Pine Schoolhouse with his brothers, sisters, and neighbors. Vince's love of horses, ranching, and baseball occupied his time as a youth. During World War II he joined the army and volunteered as a scout for his unit. He told many stories to his nephews and nieces about the war, and had several war mementoes, each with a story of its own. His actions during his time as a soldier resulted in him receiving the Silver Star for valor. He was humble and relatives had to coax him for the story of what he did to receive the medal. Some say it was for capturing a group of high ranking Germans while others say it was for saving his unit. He loved ranching and the Gordon area, and chose to stay with his brother Charlie on the home place. The sand hills and ranch life seemed to tug at his heart. Some could not understand what drew him to the place where he was born, but those who have lived in northwest Nebraska know that feeling. His nephews and nieces loved to visit him as he taught them how to ride horses, farm, and the basic activities of ranch life. For them, even picking up bales was fun. Vince was a kind and generous person and never seemed to get upset. He treated kids like they were his own. After his brother died in 1997 he continued to live on the place. Eventually, his health declined and he stayed in a private care home with others. His last months were spent in the nursing home in Gordon where he seemed happy and content. To his friends and relatives he was a good hearted soul but also quite a character. He is survived by his younger brother Edmond Quigg, who resides in Portland, Oregon. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday August 10, 2015, 11:00 am at St. Leo's Catholic Church, Gordon, Nebraska. Burial with Military Honors and American Legion Riders was held in the Gordon Cemetery. The family suggests memorials to Gordon Countryside Care and donations may be sent in care of Chamberlain-Pier Funeral Home, PO Box 366 Gordon, NE 69343.
