Verlene Simmons

Verlene A. Simmons Verlene Ann Simmons, 78, of Martin, SD, died Thursday December 17, 2015, at the Bennett County Community Hospital after a lengthy battle with breast cancer. She was born December 7, 1937, in Martin, to Harry and Vera Beck. She was one of five children. Her siblings caller her "Beans" and it was a nickname she had all of her life. On November 14, 2003 she married Earl Simmons. The couple lived in Martin where she enjoyed bowling, playing cards, dancing and keeping up with her kids and grandkids. She took pride in her gardening and spoiling her dogs, Molly and Bud. She was an excellent cook and prepared many meals for the family. She was a natural caretaker and an avid sports fan. She preferred reading mysteries and had a witty sense of humor. She loved people and was well loved by all who knew her. Verlene was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Jack Wyckoff and Roland Beck, her son-in-law Ken Hunter and nephew Scott Nelson. Verlene is survived by her husband Earl of Martin, SD, her children: Tracy Hunter of Lakeside, NE, Vicki (Richard) Ballard of Gordon, NE, Deanne (Mel) Armstrong of Ozawkie, KS, Nikki (Scott) Shald of Lafayette, CO, Jennifer (David) Ladoucer of North Platte, NE, Doug Simmons of Redfield, SD, Dwight (Bill) Simmons, of Bridgeport, NE, Darcy Simmons of Aberdeen, SD and Delinda Simmons of Allen, SD, two sisters Carmen (John) Gottschalk of Omaha, NE, and Dee (Jim) Nelson of Rapid City, SD, twenty-five grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. The family suggests memorials to C.H.A.R.T-Cancer Healing Assistance Resource Team, and donations may be sent to Security First Bank, PO Box 669, Martin, SD 57551. Bennett County Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
