Troy Green

May 1, 2027 — May 18, 2015

Troy Green Troy R. Green, 88, of Gordon, Nebraska, died May 18, 2015 at his home. Cremation was chosen by the family and a memorial service will be held at a later date. Mr. Green was born May 1, 1927, in Gordon, Nebraska, to William R. and Esther (Hull) Green. He was raised on a farm near Gordon and graduated from Gordon High School in 1944. He was drafted at 19 years of age and was honorably discharged from the Army Transportation Corps in 1947. He graduated cum laude with a degree in Chemistry from Chadron State College in 1951 and received his Master of Science degree in Organic Chemistry from Kansas State University in 1952. From there, he was recruited to work as a chemist in the research department at the Whiting, Indiana, refinery of Standard Oil (Indiana), later known as Amoco and British Petroleum. He transferred to the new refinery being built in Mandan, North Dakota, in 1954. For the next 32 years he moved through various technical and supervisory positions with Amoco in Mandan, Wales, Iran, Austria, Egypt, and in Chicago, Illinois. He retired from Amoco Egypt in 1986. On August 14, 1954, Troy was united in marriage with Phyllis Jeanette Martin at the First Presbyterian Church in Gordon. To this union were born four children: Susan, Martin, Carolyn and Edwin. Troy was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon and elder. He was an active member of Lions, American Legion, Bismarck Elks, and Amoco Retirees Club. Troy felt high regard for fellow retirees who worked hard to help the less fortunate. He was a firm believer in volunteerism and was happiest when he was helping others. Troy also served as a Boy Scout leader. Troy was also very active with Habitat for Humanity. To Troy, work was fun! He was likewise a firm believer in the worth of the individual and was adamantly opposed to the tyranny of excessive power which would subjugate the individual, especially that represented by big government. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren, especially their aptitude in knowing how to solve problems. He leaves to mourn his death, his wife, Phyllis, daughter and son-in-law Susan and Scott Simpson of Fort Collins, CO; son, Martin Green of Rochester, Minnesota; daughter, Carolyn Green, of Gordon, NE; son and daughter-in-law Ed and Angie of Oakland, California; brothers Neal Green of Gordon, and Jay and wife Jean Green of Montrose, CO, and grandchildren, nieces and nephews. His father, William, and mother, Esther, preceded him in death. The family prefers memorials to the First Presbyterian Church of Gordon or Habitat for Humanity and donations may be sent in care of Chamberlain-Pier Funeral Home, PO Box 366 Gordon, NE, 69343.
