Trav Benson

Travis Dean Benson Travis Dean Benson, 56, of Gordon, Nebraska, died August 7, 2015, at Gordon Memorial Hospital. He was born June 20, 1959, in Gordon, Nebraska, to Donald and LynnDell Benson. He attended and graduated from Gordon High School in 1978. While in high school, he was active in sports and played football, wrestled, golfed and participated in track. In 1985, Travis enrolled in Black Hills State University and graduated with a degree in education in 1992. While in college he met his wife Sherri Knutson and they were married on April 28, 1990. Travis and Sherri were blessed with two children: Turee Dean and Emmie Lynn. After College graduation, Travis accepted a teaching position at Our Lady of Lourdes in Porcupine, SD. After one year he took a teaching position in Batesland, South Dakota for 2 years and then taught at Red Cloud Holy Rosary School and eventually back to Our Lady of Lourdes and then finally once again teaching in Batesland where he was employed at the time of his passing. For a number of summers, Travis owned and operated his own Concrete Business and employed a number of high school kids over the years. After retiring from the Concrete Business he became interested in gardening. As an excellent cook, he loved trying new recipes with his homegrown produce and was quick to share with friends and family. Travis served on the Gordon School Board, Gordon Volunteer Fire Department, coached Legion Baseball and Girls Softball. The love of Travis' life was his family. His children were his pride and joy and he was so looking forward to being a Grandpa. After the kids left for college he bought a motorcycle and enjoyed riding and taking friends for rides. In most recent years, Trav's constant companion was his little dog Angel. During Travis' sickness, she was always by his side. Angel was at Travis' side when he passed away last Friday night. Travis loved life. He was a joy to be around and always fun to be with. His friendships were deep and long lasting. Whatever he chose to do, he chose to do it in a big way. Trav was preceded in death by his mother LynnDell Benson, his mother-in-law Geraldine Knutson, maternal grandparents Grace Gonsalves and Daryl Parlasca, step-grandfather Wayne Gonsalves, his paternal grandparents, Alfred and Margaret Benson and cousin Jerry Benson. He is survived by his wife Sherri, son Turee (Brittany) Benson, daughter Emmie Benson all of Gordon, father Don Benson of Gordon, sisters Donell (Lonnie) Tausan of Clinton, NE, Jonett (Jamie) Drake of Blaine, Minnesota, Daneen (Shelley) Anderson of Alliance, NE, Kody (Jason) Eisenreich of South Riding, Virginia, father-in-law Robert Knutson of Rapid City, SD, 9 nieces and nephews, 11 great nieces and nephew, many aunt, uncles and cousins and friends. A Celebration of Life was held Thursday August 13, 2015, 10:00 am at the Gordon-Rushville High School with Celebrant Harlen Wheeler officiating. Burial was held in the Gordon Cemetery. Pallbearers were Shelley Anderson, Rick Burleigh, Chad Fowler, Merlyn Jacobson, Doug Jacobson, Mike Piper, Tom Shaal, Dan Daniels and Bobby Lehman.
