Steve was born October 6, 1950, in Chadron to George and Millie (Holder) Langford. The family lived in Crawford and moved to Chadron when Steve was five. He attended the Chadron Prep School on the college campus until it closed and then transferred to the Chadron public school. He graduated from Chadron High School in 1969.
Early years were spent playing Little League baseball, and he played on the Chadron American Legion baseball team. Steve was on the football and track teams in junior high and high school and played the saxophone in the school band.
After high school, Steve attended Chadron State College for one year and then joined the U.S. Navy, where he served from 1971-1973. He did his boot training at Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Illinois and was later stationed on the U.S.S. Neptune (ARC-2) as a supply clerk. He spent a lot of time in the North Atlantic Ocean and enjoyed visiting Scotland, England, Portugal, and France.
After receiving a medical discharge from the Navy, Steve came back to Chadron. He went to work for Chadron Wholesale, making deliveries along Highway 20 from Valentine to Crawford, and to Hot Springs and Rapid City, South Dakota.
Steve was an artist; he enjoyed painting landscapes. He also did some construction work and painted houses. When Wal Mart came to Chadron, Steve helped to set up the shelving in the store, worked nights unloading trucks and stocking, and eventually became the manager of the health and beauty supply department, before retiring from work.
In his free time, Steve loved to play golf and spent lots of time at Legend Buttes Golf Course in Crawford. He watched many sports on television, especially the Nebraska Cornhuskers football. He also followed women's volleyball and men's and women's basketball, and he liked to fish. He was a member of the American Legion, Bill Dowling Post 12.
Steve is survived by his sisters Marilyn Hills, Patricia Preble, and Janet Kirby, all of Chadron and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his soul mate Carmen Fisher.
