Ronald (Ronnie) Long, 84, of Martin SD passed away on Friday, December 19th at the Bennett County hospital. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 27th at 10:00 am at the new American Legion Auditorium, with burial at the Martin Community Cemetery following the service. Military rites will be held. Ronnie was born on March 17th, 1930 in Witten SD, to Gilbert (Keith) and Mae (Merchen) Long. He grew up in the Harrington and Vetal areas where he completed the 8th grade. In December, 1949 Ronnie enlisted in the US Army. After serving a tour of duty in Anchorage AK, Ronnie was discharge in 1952. He later met and married Irene (Jeanie) Babby on December 10, 1952 in Kadoka SD. The couple moved to Potter, NE where Ronnie worked at an Army defense depot for about one year and then moved to Vetal SD, where he farmed with his dad. The couple later moved to Martin where Ronnie went to work for the Dept of Transportation, State of SD. This was a position he kept for the next 35 years. He retired from the State in 1990. In addition to working for the State of South Dakota, Ronnie also owned and operated Ron's Husky Service Station in Martin. To this union four children were born - Donald Long (Loraine) of Ridgway SC; Linda Suess of Martin; Jayne Stotts (Robert) of Scottsdale AZ; and Kimberly Hicks (David) of Martin. Ronnie is survived by his wife, Jeanie, his four children, 8 grandchildren and 13 great grand children; brothers Jack Long of Martin and Arnold Long of Gillette WY; sisters Margie Judd of Chandler, AZ and Judy Meyer of Aurora CO; and many other family members. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Christopher; his parents, and brothers, Donald and Marvin. Visition is on Friday, December 26th from 4 to 6 pm at the Bennett County Funeral Service.
