Ron Dorshorst

Ron was born in Hay Springs on July 12th 1935 to Louis and Minnie (Schoen) Dorshorst. He grew up on the family homestead south of Hay Springs and attended Banner School though the eighth grade and graduated from Hay Springs High School in 1953 with Fines and Dandies. On May 14th 1955 he was joined in marriage to Pat (Moore) in Hay Springs. The marriage was blessed with three children Sherri, Duane, and Shelley. �½�½After a year of marriage (and the arrival of the first daughter) the couple moved to California for five years where Ron worked as a welder/fitter at Kaiser Steel and a salesman for Heinz. Ron and Pat returned from California to buy the Mirage Bar from Lloyd Brailey. They brought back with them a boy added to family. That started a journey of 37 years of running Ron's Bar. During the early years they fed and watered the town of Hay Springs six days a week. Before the school cafeteria was built in 1975 the place was crowded at the noon hour with high schoolers, farmers, and business people coming in for lunch. Somewhere in there they found time to add a second daughter to the family. They wanted to keep the bar a place that had a friendly family atmosphere and many kids in the community grew up with Ron and Pat as surrogate grandparents. �½�½In 1972 Ron purchased a ranch in the Pine Ridge area from Chester Jacobs, which allowed him to rekindle his love for cattle. He continued to raise red angus cattle until he could no longer care for them, he was never so happy as when he could lease the land to his nephew to continue to have cattle on the place. In the late seventies he started a new career of pipefitting. He traveled the Midwest working at coal and nuclear power plants, railroad stations, and grain and hops processing plants. You couldn't go on a car trip with him that wouldn't point out the different projects that he worked on with pride. After he retired he "worked" as a greeter at Wal-Mart where he did more greeting than working. Ron's loves were his family, friends, cattle, golf, and cards. His sense of humor and ability to make friends were his claim to fame. He was always willing to lend a hand to those in need. His grandchildren and great grandchildren became his pride and joy and he would be glad to tell you about them all if you had the time. �½�½He was preceded into heaven by his parents, one infant brother (Dwain), brother Gary, and sister Idelle (Steggs), and one brother-in-law Harold Steggs. �½�½He is survived by wife Pat of the home. Daughters Sherri (Tom) Simons, and Shelley (Will) White, both of Chadron, and one son Duane (Pat) of Oberlin Kansas. He is also survived by one sister-in- law Pat (Gary) Dorshorst. Other survivors include 8 grandchildren, four great grandchildren (with two more on the way) and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. �½�½The family suggests memorials to the Hay Springs Fire Department, St. Columbkille Catholic Church, or the Hay Springs Pool Project.
