Raymond Greenough

October 4, 1931 — September 10, 2017

Raymond Greenough, eldest son of Marjorie (Dale) and Oscar Greenough was born at home near Norris, South Dakota on October 4, 1931. He attended schools in the Patricia area and was a 1951 graduate of Bennett County High School.

After graduating, he lived his life as a rancher, except for a few months in Omaha working for a feed company. He spent some of his spare time competing in roping events in rodeos and roping clubs in the area. He helped build the phone line in the Patricia area. He loved his work and always felt so lucky to be able to make his living doing what he loved. One source of great satisfaction to him was seeing young people get into and succeed in ranching.

On October 3, 1960, Raymond and Joan Livermont were married and moved seven miles north of Vetal, which was their home for the next 57 years. A big bonus was the addition of daughter Denise, and son John to their family.

During that time, Raymond was a member of the Vetal Fire Department serving for a few years as fire chief, served on the Bennett County Co-op board, the weed board, the local school board, the FHA board, was a brand inspector, and enjoyed playing cards with friends at the Martin Auction Café.

He and Joan took time to travel and some of his favorites were the Pendleton Rodeo in Oregon, an Alaskan Cruise, the Balloon Fest in Albuquerque, a riverboat cruise while in New Orleans, Mackinaw Island, and the locks between the Great Lakes, plus a New England fall foliage trip. He enjoyed seeing the varying farm and ranch practices in other parts of the United States and meeting people. He always liked visiting with others, but as his hearing deteriorated (even with hearing aids) he found it hard to carry on conversations, so for the past few years, he stayed home more and more.

His favorite place was always their ranch in Bennett County. His intention was to live there his entire life, but due to a brain tumor that was discovered following an ATV accident on the ranch, it was necessary for him to move to the Bennett County Hospital and later the Bennett County Nursing Home. He passed away on Sunday, September 10 at the Bennett County Hospital.

He is survived by his wife Joan of Martin, daughter Denise (Ed) Pauly of Rapid City, son John (Kim) Greenough of Johnstown, Colorado, two granddaughters Rachel Pauly Kroeger and her husband Robert Kroeger, and Rebbecca Rae Pauly all of Rapid City, and a special step-grandson Andrew (Emily) Burks of Colorado, a brother Bill (Norma) Greenough of Oelrichs and a sister Donna Greenough of Martin. Raymond was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Jesse Greenough, and two sisters, LaVerne Clem and Barbara Sears.

Funeral Services will be held Friday, September 15, 2017, 10:00 AM at the Martin American Legion, Martin, SD, with burial to be held at the Martin Community Cemetery.
