Neamon D. "Pat" Metcalf was the oldest son born to Leon Metcalf and Ina Liska Metcalf on August 18, 1924. Pat was raised on what is now the Metcalf Game Reserve north of Hay Springs. Pat and Merle rode horseback five miles to school until Pat finished 8th Grade. He attended Kadlecek School until age 14, when the family moved to the ranch close to Walgren Lake. Pat then attended Banner school until 10th grade when he transferred to Hay Springs High School where he graduated in 1943. Pat joined the Army in March of 1944 at Fort Logan, Colorado. He served in the 32nd Infantry Division from 1944-46. He saw service in New Guinea, Leyte, Luzon, and the army of occupation in Japan. Pat was awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, Infantry combat badge, Philippines Liberation medal, and several others. Pat, along with his cousin Raymond (Tuffy) Walgren, attended electrical school in Chicago, then went into the contracting business in 1948 and maintained that business until 1965. Pat was united in marriage to Mary Rose Bennett on June 19, 1949. To this union came two sons, John and Calvin. John was born in 1950 and Calvin was born in 1954. Pat and Mary built their home in Hay Springs in 1959. In 1965, Pat went to work for the REA as power use advisor where he worked until 1985. After he retired, Pat and Mary enjoyed traveling in their camper, taking cruises, and summering in Alaska. Pat was active in our local Legion Post, VFW, Elks, Masons, Shriners, and served on the County Veterans Board for over 25 years. Pat and Mary enjoyed 63 years of marriage before Pat lost Mary in November of 2012. Pat was preceded in death by his parents Leon and Ina, his wife Mary, son John, and brother Merle. Pat is survived by his son Calvin (Rhonda) of Hay Springs, nephew Tyler (Pama) Metcalf of Hay Springs, and niece, Judy Stanley of Pennsylvania. A memorial has been established for the Hay Springs Fire Department. Donations may be sent to Chamberlain Drabbels Mortuary, PO Box 443, Hay Springs, NE 69347
