Melvin Leon White was born on January 21, 1937 to William White and Grace Rimmer in Halls, Missouri. He started his working life at the early age of 12 on ranches in South Dakota. Besides his first love of being a cowboy, Melvin drove truck and worked in the oil fields in Wyoming. In 1966, he met and married Linda Wulf. To this union, four children were born, Melvin Lyle, Laura Lynn, William John, and Larry Lee. In 1988, after twenty years in Wyoming, the family moved back to Chadron where Melvin worked as a ranch hand for Pearle O'Daniel for many years. During his retirement years, Melvin spent many hours drinking coffee at Nebraskaland Tire and hauling tires to and from Scottsbluff. He is survived by his sons, Melvin of Chadron; Will (Shelley) of Chadron and Larry (Jodi) of Black hawk, South Dakota; Four sisters, one brother, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two sisters, a brother, his daughter, and many friends and horses. A memorial has been established for the Fur Trade Days Rodeo.
