Melvin Roffers

October 13, 1931 — November 18, 2017

Melvin Antone Roffers of Rushville, NE passed away Saturday, November 18, 2017, at his home in Rushville, NE.

Melvin was born October 13, 1931, in Rushville, NE, to Antone and Johanna (Drabbels) Roffers, the youngest of four children. He lived with his family in Rushville, NE and graduated from Rushville Highs School in 1948.

On January 4, 1951, he married Dorothy (Chick) Butterfield and to this union three children were born; Connie Roffers, Rushville City Clerk, Peg Sones, Sheridan County Treasurer and Tony Roffers, Catholic and Fairview Cemetery Sexton. The couple lived on a farm seven miles southeast of Rushville from 1951 until January of 1960.They moved to operate a ranch from January 1960 to January 1968. They moved into Rushville in January 1968 when Melvin started working for the Sheridan County Road Department and Dorothy started working for a shoe factory. After the shoe factory closed, Dorothy started working for the I.G.A. Grocery Store where she worked for thirty-two years. Melvin went on to work for the City of Rushville, after suffering with back problems, in charge of the City Park, Football and Softball fields and retired after thirty-three years.

Melvin loved and took great care of his children and grandchildren and very much enjoyed following all of their sports and school activities. He loved playing cards with the family, fishing and camping and particularly took great joy in being with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Melvin was always ready with a joke, funny story or song (most notably his priceless rendition of "Tiny Bubbles"). This trait has definitely been passed down the line to his great-grandchildren who named him ‘Grandpa Rooster' since he was married to ‘Grandma Chick'.

Survivors include his daughters, Connie Roffers and Peg (Dwaine) Sones; son Tony Roffers; grandchildren Travis (Christin) Sones and Traci (Court) Feddersen, great-grandchildren Taylor, Jasmine and Peyton Sones and Wyatt, Makenna and Ashley Feddersen; and several nieces and nephews.

His parents; wife Dorothy (Chick); sister Marie Gottier; and brothers Martin and William P. (Billy) Roffers all preceded him in death.

Rosary will be held Tuesday November 21, 2017, 6:00 PM at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Rushville, NE. Services will be held Wednesday November 22, 2017, 10:00 AM with burial in Fairview, Rushville, NE.

The family suggests memorials to the Rushville Volunteer Fire Department and donations may be sent in care of Chamberlain-Pier Funeral Home, PO Box 366 Gordon, NE 69343.
