Melvin Arlo Bruns, 75, of rural Chadron passed away on Monday, February 15, 2016 at Chadron Community Hospital. He was born November 6, 1940 in Crawford, Nebraska to Martin and Ester (Wohlers) Bruns. Melvin attended District 53 through 8th grade and graduated from Chadron High School in 1960. He later attended the Denver Automotive Institute for auto mechanics. On June 5, 1965 he married Sheryl Jones in Chadron. They lived in Commerce City, Colorado until 1972 when they moved to Crawford to run the Mobil Bulk Truck. In 1975 he returned to the farm where he was raised on the Table and continued farming until his death. Melvin enjoyed hunting and fishing and started raising pheasants for the State of Nebraska in the late 1980's. He established the Table Top Hunting Preserve in 1995 so hunters could enjoy an old-fashioned hunting experience. He made hundreds of new friends from coast to coast and from Alaska to Texas. Melvin was a conservationist at heart. In 1997 he received the Conservation Award for Recognition of Wildlife Habitat for planting over 10,000 trees through the years. In 2000 he received the Friend of the Ridge Award from the Governor's Wild Turkey Hunt. In 2014 he was inducted into the Dawes County Ag Hall of Fame. Survivors include his wife, Sheryl; sons Jay (Erica) and Jeff of rural Chadron; his grandson Luke; his brother Bob (Judy) Bruns of Torrington, Wyoming and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Melvin was preceded in death by his parents. Memorials have been established for Our Savior's Lutheran Church of Chadron, the Chadron Rescue Unit and the Crawford Fire Department. Services are scheduled for Friday, February 19, 2016 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church at 2 PM with Pastor Peter Bertram officiating. Respecting Melvin's wishes, cremation has taken place and inurnment will follow at a later date.�½�½
