Funeral services for Lloyd Thomas Hunzeker, 97 will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, October 18, 2024.

A memorial has been established for Pioneer Manor Nursing Home, the United Methodist Church of Hay Springs, Nebraska, and the Lloyd and Mary Ann Scholarship at Hay Springs High School. Donations can be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, P.O. Box 970, Chadron, NE 69337.

Visitation will be on Thursday, Oct. 17 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the United Methodist Church in Hay Springs.

Lloyd passed away on Sunday, October 13, 2024 in Hay Springs, Nebraska. Lloyd was born on a farm in Pawnee County. The sixth of seven brothers and sisters of Jacob Henry and Sadie Fernanda Stalder Hunzeker. At the age of fourteen Lloyd was confirmed into Saint John’s Evangelical Reformed Church. A community Church located on a corner of the Hunzeker farm.

Lloyd's education began with walking one and a half miles with older brothers and sisters to District #15, a one room schoolhouse that his son's kept reminding him was up hill both ways. The next step up was entering Humboldt High School. Lloyd served as class President both his Junior and Senior years, graduating in 1945. Furthering his education was put on hold for a year, helping his father on the farm. The fall of 1947 Lloyd enrolled in school at Peru State Teachers College, after completing two years of study and meeting his future bride, Lloyd transferred to the School of Pharmacy at the University of Nebraska. "My dear Uncle Sam" came calling at the end of his Junior year of Pharmacy school. Lloyd enlisted in the United States Air Force on August 30,1951, three days after getting married to his sweetheart, Mary Ann Becker.

Service to his country found Lloyd at Basic Training at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. His next assignment took Lloyd to KESSLER Air Force BASE, Biloxi Mississippi, then on to overseas duty in French Morocco, living in Casablanca for three years, eighteen months of which was with his wife, Mary Ann. Returning to the states in February of 1955 and moving to his next duty station in Montgomery, Alabama. Lloyd received an Honorable Discharge with the rank of Staff Sergeant on June 8, 1955. Lloyd and Mary Ann both went back to the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Lloyd to complete his final year of Pharmacy School and Mary Ann to study accounting.

Diploma in hand, Lloyd and Mary Ann headed west to Hay Springs. Lloyd, along with three partners from Gordon, Nebraska, purchased Luneburg Pharmacy, and assumed ownership July 1, 1956. Serving the community for 42 years, Lloyd retired January 1, 1998, and became a snowbird for almost 18 years; living in the valley of the sun in Mesa,

Arizona where he and Mary Ann were actively involved in the Palm Gardens community and where Lloyd served two separate terms as the President of the Palms Gardens Community Association.

Lloyd served the community of Hay Springs in many ways, promoting a new bowling lane, serving on the City Council , Chamber of Commerce President, and Chairman of United Methodist Church administrative Council. He served on the Pioneer Manor Nursing Home Board of Directors for over 30 years and was a Life Member of the American Legion, and a member of the Elks Lodge.

Survivors include his wife Mary Ann, sons Mark and wife Vicki, children Jacob and Megan; Scott & wife Paula, children Sarah & Kathryn (Katie); daughter in-law Teri, sons Christopher and Daniel; sister Mildred Bloss; and numerous nieces , nephews, and cousins.

Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob H and Sadie F, son Michael, sisters Marjorie Bruun and husband Robert and daughter Jean Wenzel, Blanche Rogers and husband Leonard and sons John and David, Doris and husband Hubert Bloss, brother Jacob Marvin and wife Reba and son Keith, brother Kenneth Wayne and wife Dolly and daughter Relda, and brother-in-law Allan Bloss.

Chamberlain Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
