Lewis Wayne Summers "Lew" to all his friends, age 83, of Crawford, Nebraska, went to be with Jesus and the love of his life, his wife Audrey, on November 12, 2017, with his family by his side.
Lewis was born on January 16, 1934, at home in Dunlap, Nebraska, to Joe and Ruth Summers. Lewis was welcomed home by his older sister Charlotte, and later on blessed by two little sisters, Georgia and Betty. His dad worked for several ranchers/farmers as a hired man and that is where Lewis gained all of his knowledge in most anything he wanted to do. Lewis started school in Dunlap. The girls said their brother was a great brother during school years. Lewis lived with his family out in Major Hale east of Chadron and went to Chadron Prep and later to Chadron High. Lewis in high school wanted to play basketball and his father let him as long as he got his chores down and then he would have to walk 7 miles in order to play. Lewis excelled in basketball, but unfortunately his father had a massive heart attack when he was 14 years old and being the only son in the family he was forced to quit school and go to work to help his mother support his three sisters and mom. The basketball coach was quite upset as Lewis was turning into such a star in basketball. Lewis had met Audrey in school but she did not like Lewis.
Lewis and Audrey then met again and they feel in love. Lewis and Audrey were married on September 4, 1953, in Chadron. To this beautiful union was born Jody Lynn, Vicki Lou, Jamie Lee, Tammy Kay, Lewis Wayne, Jr., Allen Wade, Lisa Dawn, Michael Lloyd, Steven Gregg, Robert Todd, Darla Rae, Leslie Jo, Tracy Ann and Jeffrey Miles.
Lewis and Audrey moved to Crawford in 1959, where they owned Crawford Dairy and had a flower shop in their home. Lewis delivered milk house to house and everyone in the community they would just have him go in and stock their freezers and refrigs with what Lewis felt they needed. When his four girls got old they enjoyed going with their dad delivering milk on Saturday morning. The girls had to be especially careful as milk was in glass bottles at that time. In 1975, Lewis bought a moving rig from Reagan and started the Summers House Moving. In Lewis' earlier life, he enjoyed fishing, bow and arrow hunting, hunting rocks and agates, bowling and playing cards. As time passed, his whole life was his business and his son Steve was beside him the whole time, along with numerous grandkids. It was truly a family business.
In Lewis' later years, he enjoyed going to the grandkids volleyball, basketball, football and swim meets. He really loved his kids, grandkids, family and friends and enjoyed spending time with them. Lewis loved watching the news, basketball and college football. He loved his Huskers.
