John "Leland" Jacobs, 95 years old, resided at Bennett County Nursing Home, Martin, SD, since April of 2015. He passed away August 29, 2016.
He was born April 23, 1921, to John "George" Jacobs and Susan "Blanche" Hennessy at Tuthill, SD. He attended school at the Grinden Country School through the 8th grade. As a boy and into his teens, Leland worked on various farms and ranches in the Tuthill area. In his late teens he entered the ccc.camp.
In 1942, he worked on construction in Alaska, sending home his pay for his mother to set aside to purchase farm ground at a later date. In October of 1943, Leland enlisted in the United States Army. He served on a supply/repair ship in the Philippine Islands. He was Honorably Discharged as a T-Sargent in May of 1946.
In 1946, after returning to Tuthill, Leland met Emma "Elaine" Heese at a dance at Millikin Hall in Martin, SD. They were joined in matrimony at Our Redeemers Lutheran Church on September 21, 1947. They purchased a half section of farm ground seven miles west of Martin and lived with neighbors Harry and Eddie Henchel until the farm house was made habitable. To this union three children were born, Carol , Jack and Laurie. Leland retired from farming in 1997.
Leland served on the Bennett County Co-op Board, ASCS County Committee and Our Redeemers Church Council. He also was a 100 year paid up member of the American Legion Post #240.
Leland is survived by his wife Emma of 68 years, daughter, Carol (John) Solon of Kadoka, SD, son, Jack (Madeleine) Jacobs of Torrington, WY and daughter Laurie (Richard) Hacker of O'Neill, NE. Seven grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Leland was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and one brother.
