Lawrence (Larry) Olson was born on May 28, 1936 in Minneapolis, MN to Lloyd Olson and Evelyn (Monson) Olson. He entered his final resting place on July 23, 2014 at Rapid City, SD following a brief battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 28, 2014 at 10:00 AM at Chamberlain Chapel in Chadron with Dr. Russ Seger officiating. Burial will be at 2:00 PM Monday afternoon at the Alliance Veteran's Cemetery. Casual attire is requested. A viewing will be on Sunday, July 27, 2014 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Chamberlain Chapel. Being the oldest child, Larry assumed responsibility at an early age after the death of his father and then later his mother's tuberculosis diagnosis. Larry received communion and was confirmed with the Evangelical Lutheran Church on June 4, 1950. Larry joined the Air Force following high school graduation. His twenty year military career included serving his country with assignments in Greenland, South Korea, Vietnam, and Italy. After retiring from military service Larry began his second career - construction and carpentry. In 1957, he married Nancy Hall of Bridgeport. Three daughters were born to the couple. After thirty-plus years of marriage the couple divorced. Larry married Barbara Phillips in 2007. Larry was a life-time member of the Grey Eagle Post VFW #1375 in Chadron, a 28-year member of the Chadron Elks Lodge #1399/Scottsbluff Elks Lodge #1367; and a 17 year member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Pine Ridge Aerie No. 3601 of Crawford, Nebraska. Those who knew Larry recognized his quiet faith, tender heart and deep love for family, friends, and his country. His hobbies included fishing, dancing, growing (and sharing) tomatoes, making (and sharing) beef jerky and animals (including his rescue cats Max and Molly.) His favorite activity, however, was spoiling any small child lucky enough to make his acquaintance. Larry was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings, Eileen Riddle, Dennis Olson, and Sharon Eagle. Survivors include his wife Barbara of Chadron, Nebraska; daughters, Tamela Kisner of Rapid City, South Dakota, Diana (Ed) Reich of Minatare, Nebraska and Teri (Dale) Clouser of Lander, Wyoming; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren (two more great grandchildren are expected within a few months) as well as nieces, nephews, and in-laws. Memorials may be made to Rapid City Hospice House in Rapid City, South Dakota, the VFW Honor Guard in Chadron, or the donor's choice. Donations may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, PO Box 970, Chadron, NE 69337.
