Larry John Zimmerman passed away on Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at the Ponderosa Villa. He was 82 years old. He will always be remembered for his love of life, god, family, friends, Pontiacs, and black cows. He always had a joke to tell and loved making people laugh. He had a knack for walking up to a stranger and becoming their friend.
Larry was born March 31, 1936 and weighed only four pounds. His parents were John and Minnie Zimmerman. He struggled most of his boyhood days to catch up with those bigger than he was. It was said of him that he was little but loud and a fighter. He attended a country school for eight years and graduated from Sioux County High in 1953. He was the smallest and youngest in his class. He had earned a State Farmer Degree in Agriculture and had purchased the Cross place to run a herd of angus cows. This was one of the first angus herds in Sioux County.
A young teacher in Crawford took his eye after a whirlwind courtship of six months they eloped and began their married life on the ranch. Her name was Margaret Ann Herrington, and they were married on July 10, 1959. To this union five children were born, a son Mark, and daughters Anita, Peggy, Vickie and Lora. They were married 58 years.
Larry and Margaret joined the Methodist Church in 1961. Larry liked to attend church and he and his family attended almost every Sunday. He was also a member of the Gideons and attended most of the meetings in Chadron.
He was proceeded in death by his parents John and Minnie Zimmerman.
He is survived by his loving wife Margaret, Harrison Nebraska, His son Mark, Harrison Nebraska, Daughters Anita Nelsen(Ryan), Lincoln Nebraska, Peggy Hoge(Larry) Thousand Oaks California, Vickie Hoges(Jack), Elkhorn Wisconsin, and Lora Chandler(Richard) Kearney Nebraska. He is survived by his only sister Lois Morris of Scottsbluff Nebraska, eleven grandchildren and numerus nieces and nephews. He will be missed by all.
