Karen died March 20, 2018 at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, following a brave battle with a neurological disorder known as myasthenia gravis.
She was born in Crawford on November 16, 1944 to Luther Clayton (Red) and Catherine Corbin. Karen was the third child of four born to this union. She was raised in Crawford and attended Crawford High School, and married Floyd J. Serres on May 29, 1963. The couple lived in various locations including Fort Robinson, Crawford and Sioux County until they settle in Crawford to raise their family. They were married 54 years, and had three sons.
Karen was the Site Manager for Western Nebraska Aging Office and Director of the Dawes County Senior Center for over 35 years. She was devoted to the people she served at the Center, and nurtured and cared for them. She had a lot of fun thinking of special activities for them. Karen was community minded and involved in man organization and events. She had a lot of fun line dancing with the Galloping Grannies, and being part of the Red Hat Society. She has been a member of St. John's Catholic Church since 1963 and was active in the Altar Society.
Family was very dear to Karen. She always had time to attend any activities that involved her children or grandchildren. She sat in the bleachers to many, many events. Her family was very fortunate because she showed her loving by preparing special foods for them (like her potato salad and deviled eggs). She was always up for a game, or just to have a nice phone chat, or just to sit and enjoy their company. She was very excited and looking forward to the birth of her first great grandson in May. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, sister and aunt.
Floyd and Karen enjoyed camping, and really liked serving as camp hosts for campgrounds. Karen loved traveling, and spending time with her family in Idaho and Washington. Karen will be missed by her family and friends.
She is survived by her husband, Floyd Serres, and by her sons Larry (Deb) of Potter, Nebraska; Neal of Crawford; and Casey (Nancy) of Mitchell Nebraska; seven grandchildren--Bryant (Amanda), Brittany, Clint, Cody (Nicole), Clayton, (Tara) Mitchell and Mackenzie. She also leaves her brother, Bruce Corbin; sisters, Shirley Deichert and Janice German, and step brother, Ronnie Leetch. She was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers-in-law, Tony Deichert and Bryan Sanford.
A memorial has been established for the Dawes County Senior Center. Donations may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel.
