James Fred Berndt
On a cool, crisp fall morning, October 19, 2021, James Fred Berndt, (Jim), 68, of Lakeside, NE, was moving cattle on his 4-wheeler when he collapsed. He was born June 10, 1953, to Fred and Geraldine Berndt, completing the family with 3 older siblings, Carol, Sharon, and Dale. He graduated from Gordon High School in 1972.
His passion was cutting hay in his swather during the summer, raising cattle, and ranching in the Sandhills. He was a modern day cowboy on his 4-wheeler with many incidents occurring. 4-H was one of his favorite activities and he served as 4-H King of Sheridan Co. in 1972. Later, watching his nephews and nieces show cattle was a joy to him. He loved rodeo, especially on TV, and visited the National Finals as a spectator several times.
Jim was baptized and then confirmed on June 7, 1970, at the Gordon United Methodist Church and remained a faithful servant all his life.
He is survived by his sisters, Carol Plate of Ainsworth, and Sharon Harris of Gordon, and brother, Dale (Cindy) Berndt of Lakeside, and numerous nephews and nieces who served as pall bearers. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers-in law, Paul Plate and Eugene Harris, and one great niece, Gabrielle Murray.
Services will be held Saturday, Oct. 30, 2021, 10:30 am, at the Gordon United Methodist Church with Pastor Nayda Davis officiating. Burial will be at the Gordon Cemetery. Memorials are designated for the Gordon United Methodist Church and donations may be sent in care of Chamberlain-Pier Funeral Home, PO Box 366, Gordon, NE 69343.
