Jerry Winfield Burleigh, son of the late Louis and Gertrude Burleigh, was born February 5, 1938 in Gordon, Nebraska and passed away November 23, 2019 at the age of 81 years and nine months
. As a young boy, Jerry loved to follow his father and brother around on the farm that he grew up on, southwest of Gordon. Jerry attended elementary school at Meadow Vale Country School and graduated from Gordon High School.
Following graduation, Jerry enlisted in the U.S. Army where he met and formed good friendships with other army buddies. Jerry served time in Frankfurt Germany. He and some of the other serviceman traveled as they were able. After discharge, Jerry returned to the farm west of Gordon where his parents lived.
On June 17, 1959, Jerry and Barbara Hanks were married at Our Saviors Lutheran Church. Jerry and Barbara were blessed with three children, Debra, Rick and Steven. The family enjoyed working and living on the farm, going camping and fishing, working with 4-H and church, attending their children’s events, and traveling.
Jerry served on various boards in the county. Jerry especially enjoyed the frequent coffee guests that would stop for a chat and whatever funny or encouraging words of wisdom that Jerry might have for the day.
Preceding Jerry in death were his parents, Gertrude and Louis Burleigh, sisters – Rowena Burleigh, Virginia Jacobson and husband Myron, Eileen Beutler and husband Terry, and brother Darwin Burleigh and wife Elaine.
Jerry will be missed by his wife Barbara of sixty years; daughter Debra Kolman and husband Larry; sons Rick Burleigh and wife Joanie; Steve Burleigh and wife Mary. As well as seven grandchildren: Dustin Burleigh, Jonathan, Amanda and Ryan Kolman, Jessica Metzger and husband Kaleb, Nicole Lanum and husband Justin, Allison Madsen and husband Mac; and great-granddaughters Kylie and Adlee Metzger and his sister Eleanor Strasburger and husband Dean.
Jerry was so proud of all of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as all of his nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Friday November 29, 2019, 10:00 AM at Grace Lutheran Church, Gordon, Nebraska, with Pastor Travis Sherman officiating. Burial will be in the Gordon Cemetery. A memorial has been established for the Gordon Rescue Unit or for C.A.R.E. and donations may be sent in care of Chamberlain-Pier Funeral Home PO Box 366, Gordon, NE 69343.
