George Dannar

September 13, 2023 — January 22, 2016

George Carlyle Dannar of Chadron, NE, passed away on January 22, 2016, at Crestview Care Center in Chadron, Nebraska. ½½George was born on September 13, 1923, in Crawford, Nebraska, to Carl Clint Dannar and Georgia Diana (Pearson) Dannar. He grew up and attended schools in Crawford and Chadron, Nebraska. At a young age, he tried to enlist in the Army, but was denied because they found out that he was only 16 years old. He enlisted on April 29, 1943, where he served overseas as a Private First Class with the 210 Anti Air Craft Artillery Battalion. On January 4, 1946, he was honorably discharged. ½½Upon returning home, he traveled all over the U.S. working with construction crews. He returned to Chadron in 1951 and started working as a truck driver for the Chadron Flour Mill. When the Mill burned down, he went to work for the Nebraska State Department of Roads as the supervisor of roads where he remained until he retired. ½½He married Mary (Carlson) Dannar on March 21, 1954, in the First Baptist Church in Chadron. They were married for 58 years before Mary passed away on August 22, 2012. A special celebration was held for their 50th Anniversary which both thoroughly enjoyed. ½½In June of 1965, they adopted two sisters named Kathy and Colleen. Mary and George loved doing things together. If you saw one, the other was always around somewhere. Mary's nickname for him was "Georgie Porgie" which the entire family loved to call him. He was always a good sport about it, and he would just laugh when called this special name. They loved to listen to music and to dance. In fact, George was dancing right into his 90's. They also enjoyed traveling by car and taking bus trips all over the U.S. Going on rides, having a picnic at Chadron State Park, going to Ft. Robinson for a meal and to see a play, attending events at Chadron State College, visiting with their church family or church events were also things they treasured. ½½They enjoyed family whether it be hosting family, going to family reunions, or taking nieces and nephews water skiing, teaching them to drive a car or boat (even if they were just 9 or 10), camping, playing cards, fishing, hunting, traveling to the Park or the "Fort," Angostura, Evans' Plunge, or the Black Hills. As a young boy, George loved motorcycles and rode them all of the time. He still wanted to ride them when he was older, but he had to change his bike habits since Mary wouldn't ride on a motorcycle. She said. "Ohhhh, No, no, Georgie Porgie", and she "encouraged" him to buy cars( Buicks were his car of choice!!) which he kept in pristine condition. He enjoyed watching sports, especially the Nebraska Huskers. ½½George was extremely patriotic. He was very proud of his service to his country, his country, his flag, and his fellow veterans. George had an "extensive" tool collection in his "top of the line" three car garage, but where only one car was housed, and the rest was filled with tools. He loved to make things, especially things that hadn't been invented, like his pie holder.....which would hold many pies (10-12) to take to church or family gatherings, custom made leather phone holders(in a variety of colors and shapes) that he made (at least one) for everyone at Crestview, family, and friends. ½½One of the things that clearly illustrated how George wanted to be remembered was a large travel rack to hold things in that he made and put on the back of his car with very large words(in orange) on it saying, "Smile....God Loves You!!!!" George loved his First Baptist Church where he was a member for over 60 plus years. He enjoyed helping and serving his Lord any way he could by being an usher, being the treasurer of the church, serving on multiple committees, taking various members to church when they couldn't, cooking and eating(Oh how George loved to eat...!!!) with his Men's group, or just helping anyone in need. In his later years, George really appreciated Dale Baker taking him to church and to coffee. ½½In addition to all of his church affiliations, throughout the years, he also belonged, served, and volunteered at the VFW, American Legion, Honor Guard, Chadron Historical Society, Senior Center, 60 Plus Club, and was a Gideon. Preceding George in death were his wife, Mary of 58 years, parents, brother Frank Dannar, sisters-in-law- Lorraine DeHaes, Donna Piffner, Katy Carlson; brothers-in-law- Holly Carlson, Jim Carlson, Dean Carlson, Jack Piffner; and great niece-Jamie Hoffmann. Survivors include: daughters-Kathy Kersey(and family) and Colleen Williams(and family); brother Ted Driver; sister-in-law-Edna Carlson; brother-in-law-John DeHaes; grandchildren and great grandchildren plus numerous nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews. ½½Services for George will be held on Thursday, January 28, 2016, at 10:00 at the First Baptist Church in Chadron, Nebraska with pastors Aaron Sprock and June Ballard officiating. Inurnment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery with military rites. ½½A memorial to the First Baptist Church has been established. Donations may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, PO Box 970.
