William Frank Reed "Frank" was born to Frank L. and Lennis Leggett-Reed on September 4th 1935. He died December 6, 2014 at Gordon Countryside Care. He began life in the home of his grandparents in Gordon Nebraska. He spent his childhood in Survey Valley in the Sandhills, he loved that area and the life of a cowboy. His career choices and the demands of life and family would take him in different directions but he always remained a cowboy at heart. In 1949 Frank's family moved to Rushville, Nebraska. He attended High school in Rushville where he enjoyed athletics, especially football and track. He and his football buddies frequently told stories of their success as a team in winning 22 consecutive games. The friendships Frank established while attending Rushville high lasted a lifetime. He graduated with the class of 1953. Frank served in the Army from 1954 to 1956 and he and his family were always proud of his service. A soldier and a patriot he loved this country, he celebrated it's victory's and mourned it's defeats. From 1956 to 1960 he attended Chadron State College ultimately earning a Masters Degree in education. He spent 11 years in the education field in a variety of positions. He was a teacher, principal, superintendent and a coach. He was a driving force in starting women's athletics in Bayard, Nebraska. His teams would enjoy much success and would have been state champions had records been kept. When his father fell ill in 1971 Frank and his family moved back to Rushville so he could help his parents on the farm. While in Rushville he worked as the Sheridan County Welfare Director as well as many other jobs, frequently working 3 jobs at the same time. Frank was active in the community, he held many offices in the American Legion and in 1979 he served as Commander of Post 161. He was a member of the Rushville Volunteer Fire department for many years. He also worked as a substitute teacher and announced high school football games. In 1958 Frank married Joyce Marie Arthur and was very fortunate in love. He and Joyce were married for 54 years and thrived in good times and endured in bad times but never fell out of love. This union produced 6 children, 7 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Frank is survived by his sister and brother-in-law Beverly and Ferril Barnes. Six children and spouses, Kim Talbot, Deanna and Bob Lehman, Michael and Beth Reed, Michelle Reed, Kelli and Tim Koso and Derrick and Jenny Reed. Grandchildren include Morey Talbot, Mary Talbot, Fran Talbot and Molly Day. Beau And Bridget Lehman. Damien Reed. Zack and Gage Koso. Lillie Hansen. There are eight great grand children and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Frank and Lennis Reed. His loving wife Joyce. Ed and Mary Arthur, sister in law, Helen Teinsvold, two brothers in law Leo Teinsvold and Blake Beguin. Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 10, 2014, 10:00 am at the Rushville American Legion. Burial with Military Honors were held at Fairview Cemetery, Rushville, NE. The family suggests memorials to the Wounded Warrior Project and donations may be sent in care of Chamberlain-Pier Funeral Home, PO Box 366, Gordon, NE, 69343.
