Donald D. Moore, 83, of Martin, South Dakota, died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2021, at Countryside Care in Gordon, Nebraska.
He was born November 11, 1937, in Martin, SD, to Virgil Moore and Ormetta (Hunt) Billeter.
Don graduated from Bennett County High School, Martin, SD, in 1956. Don married Reita (Willis) on November 12, 1960, and they had two daughters, Sandra Moore of Granby, Colorado, and LaLoni (Bill) Livermont of Martin, SD. He had four grandchildren: Eric Modlin, Timnath, Colorado, Sarahjane Modlin, Kearney, Nebraska, Skyler Livermont, Martin, SD, Seth Livermont (Rachael McCoy) Martin, SD, and Edwin Neigel, Martin SD. There are eight great-grandchildren.
Don spent all of his life in Martin, except for his Army service in Germany. He was enlisted from 1956-1959 and earned an Honorable Discharge.
Don worked many jobs in and around the Martin area. There are too many jobs to list, but his favorites were as a mechanic at Coon’s Chevrolet, manager Merriman Grain Elevator, and assistant manager at Ace Hardware. He began his truck driving career at Mueller Feeds and bought his first truck, a White-Freightliner, in 1971 working for Burnell Wheeler.
He was a member of Pheasants Forever, Wild Turkey Federation, NRA, Cody NE Legionnaires, Veteran of Foreign Wars, and Knights of Columbus. He served his community by being a Bennett County Sheriff Reserve Officer and Martin Town Council member.
His passion for muscle cars, hunting, and fishing were passed on to his girls and grandchildren. He was very much a family man and spent as much time as possible teaching them to be kind and honest.
Survivors include his daughters, grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Virgil and Ormetta, brother Virgil, sisters Shirley (Tech), and Norma (Allard).
Services will be Saturday, November 13, at 11:00 at the new American Legion, officiated by Bill Hines. Military services and Inurnment will be at Martin Cemetery by American Legion Post #240. All friends and family will be honorary pallbearers. Lunch will follow for all friends and family at the American Legion.
