Funeral services for Darrell R. Larsen of Chadron, Nebraska will be held on Friday, January 26, 2018 at 2:00PM at the Our Savior's Lutheran Church at 702 E. 9th St. in Chadron, Nebraska with Pastor Peter Bertram officiating. Burial will be held at the Greenwood Cemetery in Chadron, Nebraska.
Darrell was born October 23, 1935 in Rushville, Nebraska to Lloyd and Mabel (Blofsky) McLain. At the age of 7, Darrell was adopted by Raymond H. and Margaret H. (Fisher) Larsen. They lived on the Chadron Creek Ranch 10 miles south of Chadron.
Attended first through third grade Nebraska State Teacher's College Training School in Chadron. He moved with his parents to Bellflower, California in Los Angeles County, where his father worked for Boeing during World War II. The family moved to Burton, Nebraska in 1947 where his mother taught school. His mother was his teacher in a one room school house.
After the death of his grandfather, Louis Fisher, the family moved back to Chadron Creek Ranch. Darrell was glad to be back home on the ranch. Darrell attended Chadron Prep Grade School through High School.
Darrell played cornet in the Chadron pep band, he played first string guard in football - as it was written in his senior annual "if everybody had as much fight as Darrell had we could have won the championship easily."
Darrell graduated Chadron Prep in 1954.
Darrell's first year of college, he attended Colorado A & M in Fort Collins and his last three years he attended Chadron State College. He played his cornet in the college band and played many solo's.
Darrell graduated from Chadron State in 1958. He met Fayne Smith at the Campus shop where she worked and attended Chadron prep and graduated in 1958.
Darrell and Fayne (Smith) were married August 2, 1959 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Chadron, Nebraska.
Darrell and Fayne raised their three children: Maggie Mae, Danny Darrell, and Raylene Dawn on Chadron Creek Ranch.
Darrell was in a farm and ranch partnership with his father raising shorthorn cattle, duroc hogs. In November of 1978 Darrell and Fayne moved to Chadron where Darrell worked for the State of Nebraska Department of roads for 19 years. Darrell retired in November 8, 1997.
Darrell is survived by his wife Fayne; Daughters: Maggie Mae (Larsen/McLain) (Brad) McClaren of Hay Springs, Raylene Dawn (Larsen) Slavik of Independence, MO, and Son Danny Darrell (Jody) Larsen of Chadron, NE. Grandchildren Jody Kay (Soester) (Adam) Krogman, Jason Soester and fiancé Mary Rodrick, Chris (Amanda) McClaren, Charlie (Baylee) McClaren, Jobie (Alisha) Dryden, Marie McClaren, Morgan McClaren, and Brianna Larsen. Great-Grandchildren: Laura, Amy, and Katie Krogman, Chloe Soester Addison and Tesher Rodrick, Ahris McClaren, Oakley and Bentley McClaren, Hadley Dryden. Brother Duane (Marlene) McLain of Casper, WY.
Proceeded him in death his parents Lloyd and Mabel McLain, Raymond and Margaret Larsen, Father and Mother-in-law Gordon and Marie Smith, half brother Dean and Cora McLain, Sister Jacque (Lindeken) Clark, Nephew Kory Clark, and granddaughter Makayla Larsen.
In Lieu of flowers a memorial has been established for Our Savior Lutheran Church and Chadron Fire Department. Memorials may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, PO Box 970, Chadron, NE 69337.
