Funeral services for Betty Marie (Ruffing) Porter, age 88, of Crawford, NE will be Wednesday, October 21, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Crawford, NE. Wake Service will be Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. at the same location. Betty passed away on October 18, 2015 at her home of 60 years surrounded by family. She was born on January 31, 1927 in Sioux County to Mike and Edith (Serres) Ruffing. She was raised on the family farm/ranch in Sioux County and graduated from Crawford High School in 1944. Following graduation, she traveled to Georgia and California and finding work in a dairy and soda fountain. Following these employments, she returned to Crawford and worked at the Nash Finch Company. At this time she met her future husband Max Porter. Max and Betty were united in marriage on January 17, 1947. They made their home in Crawford and raised six children. Betty was a cook for the Crawford Hospital and the Crawford Public Schools. In 1973, Max and Betty purchased Saddle Rock Lanes and operated it until they retired in1988. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and served on various committees. She also served as a Cub Scout and 4H Leader. Betty enjoyed golfing, bowling, needle work and was an avid bridge player. She spent endless hours on word search and suduko puzzles. Flowers and yard work were her passion especially her violets. Betty was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was extremely proud of her family. Those closest to her fondly remember her delicious cooking, special handcrafted projects, loving hugs, kind words and witty sense of humor. Betty is survived by her husband Max, children Jaci (Ray) Eschenbrenner of Johnstown, CO, Deb Dout, Crawford, NE, John (Cindy) Porter, Alliance, NE, son-in-law Dave Coxon, Niwot, CO, David (Dawn) Porter, Denver, CO, and Jeanne (Greg) Limbach, Kearney, NE; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sister Jean Hissam, Douglas, WY; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by parents Mike and Edith Ruffing; brother Bill Ruffing; daughter Robin Coxon. Memorials have been established for the Crawford Fire Department and St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Donations may be Chamberlain Chapel is in charge of arrangements.�½�½
