Betty was born on June 10, 1927 in Chadron, NE to Earl E. and Maud M. Burk. She graduated from Chadron High School in 1945. On May 29, 1945 she was united in marriage to Richard Marion McHenry in Chadron. To this union, four daughters were born: Mary, Jeanie, Barbara and Ruthie. Marion was still in the U.S. Navy for the first one and a half years of their marriage and they lived in Beaufort, South Carolina; Westerly, Rhode Island; Key West, Florida and Norfolk, Virginia before returning home to Chadron. Except for 6 months living in Corona, California and 2 years living in American Falls, Idaho, Betty and her family lived in Chadron. In 1960 they built their home on a quarter section of the McHenry farm. Betty continued to live on the farm, northeast of Chadron until moving into town in July of 1991.
Betty and her husband Marion were baptized into the First Baptist Church in May of 1951. In 1961, Betty and Marion became members of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (now known as the Community of Christ Church). Betty wanted her family and friends to know how very much she depended on and trusted God in her every day life, from the time that she woke in the morning, until she went to sleep at night, God was very close to her in her thoughts and in her daily activities. She was thankful for her family, friends and health.
Until the death of her husband in December of 1974, Betty was happy remaining in the home, taking care of her home, family, garden and flowers which brought her much happiness and contentment. After Marion's death in 1974, Betty did work outside the home for the Chamber of Commerce, Anderson Clothing, Chadron State College, Pine Ridge Job Corp Center and 11 1/2 years for the Ben Franklin Store before her retirement in January of 1989. After her retirement, she enjoyed her volunteer work for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program.
Now as she passes over to her heavenly father, she will be greatly missed by her survivors: daughters; Jeanie Dawkins of Chadron, Barbara Williams of Loveland, CO, Ruthie and Bob Stowell of Scottsbluff, son in law, David Carrick of Chadron; sister in law, Phyllis Burk of Chadron, 12 grandchildren: Tim, Davey, Angel, Julie, Lori, Jennifer, Richard, Nicholas, Dennis, Jason, Nickie and Heather, 6 great grandchildren: Brandon, Chloe, Kaitlyn, Samantha, Bryant, Braxton and Sarah and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Marion, daughter Mary, brothers: Kenneth, Phillip, Larry and sisters: Cleo and Kathryn.
