Albert W. Baumeister passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Friday August 11, 2017, at Pikes Peak Hospice.
Albert was born on Christmas Day 1944, in Colorado Springs, CO to Elmo A. Baumeister and Esther M. (Arthur) Baumeister.
His family moved to Rushville, NE, where he grew up and attended school. He was a 1963 graduate of Rushville High School, where he enjoyed competing in bull riding, and won a championship his senior year.
Albert enlisted in the United States Navy, where he spent four years sailing the world and was involved in the Vietnam War. One of his ships was part of the rescue group that recovered one of the Gemini Spacecraft. He was also part of the first nuclear powered task force to engage the enemy in war.
After the service he attended college in Sheridan, WY, where he was part of the rodeo team. He went into surveying after college and ended up in the mountains of Colorado, where he eventually bought and ran the J-J Bar and Grill for several years. Upon the death of his aunt he bought her gift shop, the La Chemere, in Manitou Springs, CO, where he resided until his death.
Albert was preceded in death by his mother Esther Baumeister Thomas, his father Elmo Baumeister and stepfather Garold (Jack) Thomas, as well as several aunts and uncles.
He is survived by his sister Judith Penn; brothers Arthur Baumeister and Alan Thomas; as well as four nephews, two nieces, five great-nephews and five great-nieces.
A time of celebration will be held Friday May 25, 2018 from 1:00 to 3:00 PM at Chamberlain-Pier Funeral Home, Gordon, NE. Inurnment with Military Honors will be held in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Rushville, NE.
